This paper proposes a way of understanding sound criticism that avoids an important part of the problems of vagueness associated to this expression. After analyzing the functions of the systems for weighing evidence and revising the definitions of sound criticism suggested in different texts, the conclusion is that what really is at stake it's a certain way of distributing responsibilities for choosing the rules to validate 'facts'. In the case of sound criticism, that responsibility falls in those who practice a prestigious discipline in the construction of knowledge or in all those that belong to the community (the same community of the judge),that share a common comprehension of reality. When conceiving sound criticism in this way it turns possible,in principle,to control judicial decisions.
